A fire risk assessment is a process of identifying fire hazards and evaluating the risks to people, property and assets. It is carried out by a competent person and is a crucial part of ensuring a premises takes as many precautions as possible to prevent the risk of fire. Fire risk assessments should be reviewed on a regular basis, or when there are changes to the premises or to the way it is used.
The Fire Safety Order 2005 states that the responsible person for a premises must ensure that a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment is carried out. The responsible person is usually the employer, business owner or landlord, but can also be a managing agent, Facilities Manager or other person who has control over the premises.
The responsible person must also appoint one or more competent persons to help them carry out the fire risk assessment and to provide advice on Fire Safety matters. A competent person is someone who has the knowledge, experience and skills to be able to identify Fire Hazards and assess risks.

The assessor will visit the premises and identify any Fire Hazards, assess the risks and make recommendations to the responsible person on how these risks can be reduced or eliminated.
